MOONDANCE 39
Design, Construction, Rig & Sails, Systems, Finishing, Hydrostatics

Some part acquired taste, some part pure sensation.

It takes much time and experimentation to develop the taste for a special single malt like a 12 year old Laphroaig from Islay. The sensation is unrivalled; a perfect synergy between product, context and consumer.

On the other hand the sensation of moving over water at speed is not an acquired taste. This is pure pleasure.

Moondance 39 is a boat for those that have acquired the taste for the exceptional, rare and personal experience of sailing something simple and graceful, without embellishments and without the clutter and mass of unwanted facilities. It is a boat for those that want to feel the exhilaration of pure speed with no fuss.

Moondance 39 is a modern performance yacht with elements of traditional styling. She has been designed to perform exceptionally well with little effort. Her slightly flared bows turn elegantly into a tumblehome stern combined with a low freeboard gives her a sleek and distinctive look. Below the waterline she is equipped with a state of the art underbody and appendices. Moondance 39 radiates style and performance.

The cockpit is gigantic. Two sofa-like seats measuring 2.6m by 0.5m surrounds a large cockpit floor only broken by the large tiller and main sail track. The internal arrangement is minimalistic and comfortable. A king size double fore-berth extends into two saloon seats and a galley and heads. The navigation area is similar to that found on open 60s; it is workmanlike and comfortable.

Design

Moondance 39 is designed by Zach de Beer to his "Black Wolf" design. An engineer by profession, Zach has over twenty years experience in the engineering and building of high performance yachts such as the Roger Martin designed Aerodyne 38 and South 35 (designed by Finot).

Her performance secret is to be found in her weight and shape. She has a displacement of 4300kg on a waterline length of 10.5m, a large rig and high righting moments. This gives her performance indicators that are inspiring; a displacement length ratio of just over 100, sail area displacement ratio of 29 and a wetted surface of 20 square meters. The hull form was designed without considering any handicap system; boat speed in itself is timeless. The hull remains almost perfectly symmetrical through all angles of heel. Moondance 39 is an extremely well balanced and stiff yacht.

Construction
Moondance 39 is build with Western Red Cedar strip plank (45mm by 18mm planks) epoxy bonded. She is sheathed on the exterior and interior with e-glass. SP-Systems epoxy resins (SP106 and Ampreg20, Ampreg 22) are used throughout. Bulkheads (15mm marine ply) and internal furniture (9mm) are bonded to the hull and epoxy coated. The deck and coach roof is epoxy sheathed marine ply and covered with teak or painted. All internal structures were designed to act as structural components. The hull and deck forms an immensely strong but light monocoque structure.

Rig & Sails
Moondance 39 has a well balanced fractional rig set towards the center of the boat. The keel stepped mast with double swept back spreaders carries a 45 square meter fully battened mainsail with a large roach and a 105% jib (30 square meters). An asymmetric spinnaker flown off a wishbone bow sprit completes the sail plan. No runners are required. This configuration ensures maximum performance and balance with the least effort. All halyards and sheets are lead back to the Andersen winches on the coach roof and deck.

Systems
A 88l fresh water tank provides cold and hot water to the galley and heads as well as a shower in the cockpit. A large electric bilge pump backed up by two manual pumps ensures dry bilges. Bilge and waste water is pumped overboard. The heads is equipped with a toilet, sink and shower. The galley consists of a large coolbox, two burner stove, sink and ample storage.

The Nanni 21HP diesel engine drives a folding prop and is fed by a 88l fuel tank. Access to the motor is excellent and all filters, pumps and the calorifier is accessed through the large cockpit locker.

The electric system consists of two 70Ah batteries, 12 switches on the switch panel, LED lights and is, like all the systems on board designed to be simple, accessible and functional.

Navigation equipment includes Raymarine ST60 wind, speed and depth system as well as a Raymarine VHF and Furuno GPS. Deck gear is provided by Harken.

Finishing
The hull is painted using Awlgrip systems. The deck, cockpit floor and seats are in teak or painted and the coach roof top and sides are finished with bright finished mahogany. The portlights are of stainless steel and all deck hardware are in stainless steel.

Down below Moondance 39 is comfortable and spacious. The styling is minimalist and functional with ivory paint, dark mahogany and stainless steel and chrome finishing. Berths are enormous and the saddle navigation seat and navigation area is equally large and functional.

Only CE approved Vetus components have been used in the plumbing, gas, electric and drive systems.
